Tell me if this sounds familiar. You did a "repair installation" on Windows XP, it asked for viaagp1.sys, a file which you do not have. You ignored it, it looked like installation was proceeding...and then you just hung. Or maybe you booted fine but Windows now has no clue what your AGP adapter is, and everything is just generic default (what happened to me).

I've been googling on this one for awhile. Here's some things I found ...

  • If your computer is not even getting into Windows, then see if your bios offers a "Load failsafe settings" option which will take the bare bones version of most options. By doing this I was able to boot just fine. Slowly, but at least I could get in.

If this works for you then, when you have the time and patience, you can work back and forth, screen by screen, switching from failsafe to normal/optimized, and see what settings change. Surprisingly not many of them do. As you find them you can just change one at a time -- set optimized defaults, then change the one setting, then reboot and see what happens. For me it was an auto setting for DRAM Clock. Failsafe sets it to 100mhz, which works. So I just run optimized settings with DRAM Clock 100mhz, and everything works fine.

  • Once I could boot I went out and got a new AGP video card to see if it was the card. This card also was not recognized. Even the driver disk it came with basically said "You're not running the card for which these drivers apply." Hmf.

  • I went to VIA Arena Forums and posted my woes. Not counting the guy that said "cut your losses and reinstall", I found this answer! After running the recommended Everest software I saw what I'd figured, but now confirmed -- my graphics card was running just fine, but somehow it was listed as "AGP disabled'. Since none of my BIOS settings were stating that (even in failsafe mode all the AGP settings are fine), I knew it had to be Windows.

Also in the post is the recommendation to use the 4-in-1 version of the Via driver, which I did. I rebooted...and promptly locked up. Holy Cow!

Back to the Windows disk and repair install. But now the Via download has indeed put viaagp1.sys onto my drive. Everything goes smoothly. If the windows install fails or hangs, remember to put your bios back into failsafe mode.

I reboot...and Windows does actually detect my video card (3dfx Voodoo3) and I'm in business!

Big thanks to JiminElkGrove on Via Arena Forums for the key to the whole thing!!

Note : I keep most of the geeky stuff these days over at Duane's Brain, so if you didn't find what you were looking for here, check over there. Never know!

Where did you get the viaagp1.sys driver? I am having the exact same problem, but I can't find the driver anywhere...
NOT SOLVED - EVERY PLACE I GO TO DOES NOT WORK - OUTDATED ETC - WHAT'S THE CATCH ?? I'M VERY TIRED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I found the whole set of drivers on the Via site (www.viaarena.com). their website sucks (don't bother to do a search for anything you won't find it). Make your way to: Downloads -> Drivers -> XP -> "Chipset or platform driver" and then download the "Version 5.17A of the Hyperion Pro driver" set (or whatever is the current version). I unzipped the files onto a USB thumb drive and stuck that in my computer. Had to reboot so the thumb was recognized, but once you've done that, owhen the XP install hangs again looking for the driver, choose "browse" and find the driver on your thumb drive.
Never mind...duh. I guess I should have paid attention to the site I was on...
download file at http://www.csacw.com/drivers/Motherboards/Via/4in1442v(a)p2/WIN2K/ it worked for me

I am having the same problem today and unfortunately I am just unable to find the driver. If you still have it would mind sending it to me. Thanks Bernard
thanks for pubblishing this url!!!!! VERY VERY GOOD!!!!
I found the VIAAGP site and it has numerous driver downloads. Even the VIAAGP1.sys has numerous choices. Since I'm the end of the End Users, and can only discern my OS is Windows XP Pro, I know that driver is supposed to apply to that. But when I downloaded it, it went into my Windows file. I noticed it does not activate by clicking on an "Executable" extension. So I'm at a loss to figure out how to get it running and recognized by Windows XP, unless I have to reinstall XP and hope it see the file in the Windows Folder. wiljon
not knowing your original problem i will explain mine. i was repairing my winxp home via the install cd and during the repair it asked for VIAAGP1.SYS and its location. i browsed for the file through the window asking for the file and clicked OK and the repair continued. hope this helps

I think it was mentioned above, but this file can be found by unpacking the via 4in1 driver with winrar.
Unpacking from the VIA 4in1 driver is the quickest and easiest way to resolve this issue. Thanks Al for the post. It saved me tons of time!
Where to find the Via 4in1 driver ? Here http://www.3dnews.ru/files/pub/drivers/via/via_4in1_441.zip Simply unzip and proceed as described above. Thanks everyone !

Please! Ineed another URL for the download of the file. Somebody say me please.
You should find it in your motherboards driver & utility cd. Just unrar it.
Is there any way to install it without repairing windows? ---- You may think your windows is running fine but it's just an illusion.
I humbly thank you for writing this article - You saved my computer from flying to a brick wall! And my nerves too =)
Thanks Alot this save the computer I was working on. I will save this onto disk and keep it if I need it again. I'm a tech at a local shope and this save me alot of time in doing a repaire install of windows XP. So once again thank you for this link.

insert your ASROCK AMD-VIA cd into your cd/dvd-rom & install the 4 in 1 Drivers & HEY PRESTO you have your VIAAGP1.SYS file back!
i tried to do a recovery installation and this file was asked, and i dled a 4 in 1 driver, and there was four vigagp1.sys in there, and i think i might have browsed the wrong version of the file, (i later found there was another1 labled xp) now when i try to continue the installation to rebrowser the right file, the brower doesnt pop up, and the installer hangs... i need help please!!
yea the same thing happends to me... and I even installed the sucker a bunch of times :(
I burned the file on a CD and browsed to it... seemed to go on fine, but then asked for windows XP CD again... even that went fine but a few minutes later the installer froze... might have nothing to do with the VIAAGP thing, though...
Thanks! It appears to have worked for me. All I did was burn the unzipped files to a disk and put the disk into the PC needing a WinXP repair. Pointed to the new disk and VOILA! Thanks.
